About
ElectricMonk is a self-hosted infrastructure project. We believe in data sovereignty — your data should live on hardware you control, not in someone else's cloud.
Built on Kubernetes running on bare-metal Gentoo Linux, with encrypted storage, automated backups, and GitOps-driven configuration management.
The Stack
Operating System
Gentoo Linux — compiled from source for maximum control.
Orchestration
Kubernetes with Cilium CNI and Gateway API for ingress.
Storage
Longhorn for persistent volumes with encryption at rest. CNPG for PostgreSQL.
Backups
Velero for cluster state, Longhorn snapshots for volumes, CNPG barman for databases.
Acceptable Use & Privacy Policy
Welcome to electricmonk.io! This is a private, independent community hub built for our family and friends to chat, share files, send emails, and connect — without being tracked by algorithms or corporate ads.
Because this server is run independently (by me!) rather than a massive tech corporation, there are a few ground rules and understandings we need to agree on to keep this a safe, reliable space for everyone.
1. The “Electric Monk” Promise
My responsibilities as server administrator:
- Total Privacy: You are not the product here. I do not read your emails, look at your private files, or read your private chats. Period. (In fact, our Matrix chat server uses End-to-End Encryption, meaning I physically cannot read your messages even if I tried.)
- Best-Effort Reliability: I work hard to keep the server online, updated, and secure. I run regular, automated backups of our data to protect against hardware failures.
- No Ads, No Tracking: I will never sell your data, run advertisements, or track your behaviour across the web.
- Fair Warning: If I ever need to shut the server down or perform major maintenance that will cause downtime, I will give you as much advance notice as humanly possible so you can download your data.
2. The “Reality Check”
What I cannot guarantee:
- No 100% Uptime Guarantees: Sometimes the internet goes out, or a server needs to reboot. If the email or file server goes down for a few hours on a Saturday, please be patient!
- Not for Mission-Critical Data: While I take backups very seriously, you should not use Electric Monk as the absolute only place you store life-or-death data. If you have a critical legal document or irreplaceable family photos, please keep a backup copy on your own computer or hard drive. I cannot be held legally or financially liable for accidental data loss.
3. Your Responsibilities
The rules of the house:
- Keep Your Account Safe: Your password is the key to your email, files, and chats. Use a strong password, and please set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in your account settings. Do not share your login with anyone.
- Don’t Be a Resource Hog: I pay for the hard drives and internet bandwidth out of pocket. Please use the file storage reasonably. If you try to upload 50 Terabytes of raw 8K movie files, we are going to have to have a chat!
- Be a Good Neighbour: Treat others with respect. Harassment, hate speech, spamming, or abusive behaviour toward anyone on this server (or outside of it) will result in your account being instantly disabled.
- No Illegal Content: Do not use this server to store, share, or transmit pirated software, stolen media, or any illegal content. If it breaks the law, it doesn’t belong here.
4. The “Public Web” Warning
For Mastodon, PeerTube, & Ghost blogs:
Electric Monk is connected to the wider open web (the Fediverse). If you use our social broadcasting tools (like Ghost blogs, Mastodon, or PeerTube):
- Public means Public: When you publish a public post or video, it leaves our server and is copied to other servers around the world. I cannot delete it from the internet once it’s out there. Please think before you post!
By logging into electricmonk.io, you agree to these basic guidelines. I am thrilled to have you here — enjoy the space!
